“He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love.” — Song of Solomon 2:4
SOUNDING
In the ancient world, a banner represented identity, allegiance, and protection. Armies marched under banners that declared who they belonged to and who stood over them. Here, the image is transformed. The banner over God’s people is not fear, shame, performance, or rejection. It is love.
That changes the way identity is understood. Before achievement, before failure, before titles or roles, there is this deeper truth: you are loved by God. Not reluctantly accepted. Not merely tolerated. Loved fully and intentionally.
The setting of the verse also matters. The banqueting house is a place of welcome, celebration, and belonging. The image is one of nearness and delight, not distance or cold obligation. God’s love is not distant affection. It is active, covering, and personal.
Many people live as though their identity is defined by success, approval, productivity, or failure. Song of Solomon pushes deeper. Identity rooted in God’s love becomes steadier because it is not built on constantly changing circumstances. His love remains even when emotions fluctuate or performance falls short.
When that truth settles deeply into the heart, it changes the way a person moves through life. Love becomes the covering over fear, over insecurity, and over striving. It becomes the foundation from which everything else is lived.
