“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.” — Proverbs 1:7

SOUNDING
Proverbs opens with a foundational truth about wisdom. Real knowledge does not begin with intelligence, education, talent, or experience. It begins with the fear of the Lord.

This kind of fear is not panic or dread. It is reverence. It is the recognition that God is holy, wise, and worthy of trust. It means taking Him seriously enough to let His perspective shape your own. Reverence changes the way a person thinks, chooses, and lives because it places God at the center rather than the self.

That is why Proverbs calls it the beginning of knowledge. Wisdom grows from the posture of a heart that honors God. Without that foundation, knowledge can still exist, but it easily becomes distorted by pride, self-interest, or limited perspective. Reverence steadies the soul because it reminds you that you are not the highest authority in your life.

The verse also contrasts wisdom with resistance. Fools despise instruction because pride resists correction. Wisdom, however, remains teachable. It listens. It learns. It stays open to being guided.

Every meaningful decision begins somewhere. Proverbs says the best starting point is humility before God. When that foundation is in place, wisdom has room to grow.
