“So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.” — Psalm 90:12
SOUNDING
Psalm 90 is written by Moses, a man who had witnessed both the greatness of God and the fragility of human life. He had watched generations rise and fall in the wilderness. He understood how quickly time moves and how easily people drift through life without reflection.
When Moses asks God to teach us to number our days, he is not encouraging fear or obsession with time. He is asking for perspective. Numbering your days means recognizing that life is limited and therefore valuable. It means refusing to live carelessly or endlessly distracted.
That awareness produces wisdom. When a person realizes time is sacred, priorities begin to shift. Energy is no longer wasted as easily on what is shallow or temporary. Relationships matter more. Purpose becomes clearer. Attention is given to what carries lasting weight instead of only what feels urgent in the moment.
Moses understands that people often live as though there will always be more time. This prayer pushes against that illusion. It invites a person to live intentionally, aware that each day is both finite and meaningful.
Wisdom grows when life is viewed through that lens. Days stop being something to merely get through and become something to steward well.
