“The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18

SOUNDING
David writes this psalm after a moment of deep distress. He had been on the run, fearing for his life, and found himself in a humiliating situation where he had to pretend madness to escape danger. This is not a moment of strength or control. It is a moment of vulnerability, pressure, and uncertainty.

Out of that experience, David comes to a clear realization. God is near to the brokenhearted. Not distant, not removed, not waiting for people to recover before drawing close. Near. Present in the middle of pain.

This challenges the instinct many people have in difficult seasons. There is often a tendency to withdraw, to feel like brokenness creates distance from God. David’s words move in the opposite direction. Brokenness does not repel God. It draws Him closer. When the heart is crushed, God’s presence becomes more immediate, not less.

The phrase “saves the crushed in spirit” speaks to more than external rescue. It points to inner restoration. God meets people in their lowest places and begins to rebuild what feels shattered. He does not ignore the pain. He enters into it.

David’s perspective comes from experience. He is not offering a theory. He is describing what he has found to be true. In the place where he felt most exposed, God was not absent. God was there.
