“Do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.” — Nehemiah 8:10
SOUNDING
The people of Israel have gathered as Ezra reads the Law aloud for the first time in a long while. As they listen, something begins to happen inside them. They recognize how far they have drifted. The words expose their failures, and the weight of it brings them to tears. It is a moment of deep conviction and honest emotion.
Nehemiah sees what is happening and steps in with a surprising response. He does not dismiss their grief, but he redirects it. He tells them not to remain in sorrow because the joy of the Lord is their strength. This is not a call to ignore what they have heard. It is an invitation to understand what God is doing.
God’s goal is not to leave them in shame. He is restoring them. The same Word that reveals their condition is also drawing them back into relationship. Joy enters not because everything is easy, but because God is present, active, and willing to restore what has been broken.
This kind of joy is not surface-level emotion. It is a steady confidence in who God is. It strengthens the heart where guilt would otherwise drain it. It steadies the soul when everything feels uncertain. It allows a person to move forward instead of staying stuck in regret.
Nehemiah reminds the people that strength does not come from pushing harder or carrying the weight alone. It comes from receiving what God is giving. His joy becomes the foundation that holds them as they rebuild.
