“Know the God of your father and serve him with a whole heart and with a willing mind, for the LORD searches all hearts and understands every plan and thought.” — 1 Chronicles 28:9
SOUNDING
David speaks these words to Solomon as he prepares to hand over leadership and the responsibility of building the temple. This is not a casual moment. It is a father speaking to a son, and a king speaking to his successor. Out of everything David could emphasize, he centers the conversation on the heart.
He tells Solomon to know God and to serve Him with a whole heart and a willing mind. David understands that leadership will test Solomon in ways that ability alone cannot sustain. There will be pressure, decisions, and moments where outward success could mask inward drift. What will matter most is not how impressive Solomon appears, but how aligned his heart remains.
A whole heart is not a perfect heart. It is an undivided one. It is a heart that is not constantly negotiating between God and everything else. It is a heart that chooses sincerity over image, integrity over appearance, and devotion over convenience. A willing mind reflects readiness, not reluctance. It is the posture of someone who is available to God, not just capable.
David adds a sobering reminder. God searches the heart and understands every thought. Nothing is hidden. That truth is not meant to create fear but clarity. God is not looking for performance. He is looking for authenticity. A life that is fully turned toward Him matters more than one that simply looks right on the surface.
