“Please let there be a double portion of your spirit on me.” — 2 Kings 2:9

SOUNDING
Elijah is nearing the end of his ministry, and Elisha has stayed close to him through every step of the journey. As they travel together, Elijah knows his time is coming to an end and asks Elisha what he wants before he is taken away. It is a defining moment. Elisha could have asked for position, recognition, or influence. Instead, he asks for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit.

In that culture, a double portion was the inheritance given to the firstborn son. Elisha is not asking to become more famous than Elijah or to surpass him in status. He is asking to carry the responsibility, the calling, and the spiritual weight of what Elijah has been entrusted with. He wants to continue the work of God faithfully.

That request reveals something about Elisha’s heart. He is not chasing visibility. He is pursuing depth. He understands that what made Elijah’s life powerful was not his personality or presence, but the Spirit of God at work through him. Elisha wants that same closeness with God, that same alignment, that same source of strength.

This moment challenges the way people often think about growth and success. It is easy to want more influence or more recognition, but the deeper call is to want more of God. When that becomes the focus, everything else finds its proper place.
