“Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil.” — 1 Kings 3:9
SOUNDING
Solomon has just stepped into leadership after David’s death. He is young, aware of the weight of responsibility, and honest about his limitations. God appears to him and offers an open invitation: ask for whatever you want. It is a moment where Solomon could have secured wealth, power, long life, or victory over his enemies.
Instead, Solomon asks for discernment. He recognizes that leadership requires more than strength or intelligence. It requires the ability to see clearly, to understand what is right, and to make decisions that align with God’s will. He knows that without wisdom, everything else he might gain would eventually fall apart.
God honors that request because it reveals Solomon’s heart. He is not chasing status or advantage. He is seeking the capacity to lead well. Discernment allows a person to look beneath appearances, to distinguish truth from distraction, and to recognize the direction God is giving in complex situations.
This moment shows what God values. When a person acknowledges their need and seeks wisdom first, it creates space for God to work in a deeper way. Solomon’s request becomes the foundation for everything that follows in his life.
