“The LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.” — 1 Samuel 16:7
SOUNDING
Samuel is sent to Bethlehem to anoint the next king of Israel after Saul’s failure. Saul had looked like the perfect king. Scripture says he was taller than everyone else, impressive in presence, and exactly what the people had asked for: a leader who looked strong, capable, and kingly. On the outside, Saul checked every box.
But over time, Saul revealed a deeper issue. His leadership drifted from trust in God to reliance on himself. He began to fear people more than he feared God. He made decisions out of pressure instead of obedience. In key moments, he partially obeyed God’s commands, reshaping them to fit what seemed reasonable or beneficial. Eventually, God rejects Saul as king not because of his appearance, but because of his heart.
This is the backdrop when Samuel arrives at Jesse’s house. When he sees Eliab, Saul’s pattern repeats in his mind. Eliab looks like Saul, strong, tall, impressive. It feels familiar. It feels right. But God stops him: “Do not consider his appearance or his height… the LORD looks at the heart.”
One by one, Jesse’s sons pass before Samuel, and each is rejected. The obvious choices are not God’s choice. Finally, David is called in from the fields, young, overlooked, and unexpected. While others were positioned for recognition, David had been shaped in obscurity. He had learned trust, dependence, and faithfulness in places no one else was watching.
God chooses David because of his heart. Where Saul’s heart drifted, David’s heart pursued. Where Saul performed for people, David cultivated devotion before God. The contrast is clear: outward strength may elevate you, but inward character sustains you.
This reframes everything. God is not searching for the most impressive person. He is searching for the most aligned heart.
