“Only fear the LORD and serve Him faithfully with all your heart. For consider what great things He has done for you.” — 1 Samuel 12:24
SOUNDING
For years, Samuel had served as judge and prophet, guiding the nation under God’s leadership. When the elders demand a king “like all the other nations,” Samuel takes it personally. He feels rejected and grieved. From his perspective, the request sounds like the people are dismissing both his leadership and the way God has been governing them.
God responds with an important correction. The LORD tells Samuel not to take the request personally. “They have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me as their king.” God gives Samuel a wider perspective. Israel’s problem is not merely political; it is spiritual. They are drifting from trust in God toward dependence on human systems and visible leadership.
Even so, God allows them to have a king. Before stepping back from leadership, Samuel gathers the nation and gives them a final charge. The future of Israel will not ultimately depend on the king. It will depend on whether the people continue to honor God. Samuel simplifies the path forward with a single instruction: fear the LORD and serve Him faithfully with all your heart.
Then he gives the reason. “Consider what great things He has done for you.” Samuel knows that gratitude anchors obedience. When people remember God’s faithfulness, their hearts stay aligned. Service becomes an expression of love rather than an obligation.
Samuel’s words remind Israel, and us, that leadership structures may change, but the foundation of faith never does. A life centered on remembering God’s goodness will naturally grow into a life of faithful devotion.
