“The LORD repay you for what you have done, and a full reward be given you by the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.” — Ruth 2:12

SOUNDING
After arriving in Bethlehem with Naomi (Ruth’s mother-in-law), Ruth begins working in the fields during the barley harvest, so the two of them can survive. According to Israel’s law, poor people and foreigners were allowed to gather leftover grain behind the harvesters. Ruth quietly joins the workers in the fields belonging to a man named Boaz, unaware that this moment will change her story.

Boaz soon notices her. He learns that Ruth left her homeland, her family, and everything familiar in order to care for Naomi and follow the God of Israel. What catches his attention is not ambition or reputation but faithfulness. Ruth has been working steadily from morning until evening, doing the humble work necessary to support someone she loves.

Boaz responds with a blessing. He recognizes that Ruth’s decision to seek refuge under the God of Israel matters more than the difficult circumstances surrounding her. In speaking this blessing, he acknowledges something profound: God sees what others might overlook. The quiet loyalty, the sacrifices no one applauds, and the perseverance that happens far from public attention all matter in the economy of God.

Ruth was not pursuing recognition. She was simply being faithful. Yet God was already weaving her quiet obedience into a larger story of redemption that would reach far beyond the field where she was gathering grain.
