“Your people shall be my people, and your God my God.” — Ruth 1:16

SOUNDING
The story of Ruth unfolds during the time of the Judges, a period in Israel’s history marked by instability, moral confusion, and repeated cycles of drift away from God. It was a time when, as the book of Judges says, “everyone did what was right in his own eyes.” Against that backdrop of chaos and uncertainty, the book of Ruth introduces a quiet story of loyalty, faithfulness, and redemption.

Ruth is a Moabite woman whose life becomes intertwined with Naomi, an Israelite widow who has lost her husband and both of her sons. Naomi decides to return to Bethlehem after hearing that God has once again provided food for His people. She urges her daughters-in-law to remain in their homeland, where they might have a chance at stability. One of them returns, but Ruth refuses to leave Naomi. In a moment of remarkable commitment, Ruth binds her future to Naomi’s and declares, “Your people shall be my people, and your God my God.”

Ruth’s faith begins not with a miracle but with a decision. She walks into uncertainty with no promise of security, provision, or restoration. Yet her quiet “yes” to God becomes part of a much larger story. In time Ruth marries Boaz, and their family line eventually leads to King David and, generations later, to Jesus. In the middle of a chaotic era, one woman’s faithful decision becomes part of God’s unfolding redemption.
