“The LORD said to Gideon, ‘You have too many men.’” — Judges 7:2
SOUNDING
When Gideon finally gathers an army to confront the Midianites, the numbers seem promising. Thirty-two thousand men respond to the call. Yet God looks at the army and says something unexpected: “You have too many men.” If Israel wins with an army that size, God explains, the people may believe their own strength secured the victory.
So, God begins to reduce the army. First, anyone who is afraid is allowed to go home, and twenty-two thousand leave! Ten thousand remain. Then God narrows the number even further through a simple drinking test at the water, until only three hundred men remain. Against an enemy described as countless as locusts, three hundred soldiers appear completely inadequate.
But this is exactly the point. Strategy, numbers, or human strength will not explain the coming victory. It will clearly belong to God. When the battle unfolds, Gideon’s small group surrounds the Midianite camp with torches, jars, and trumpets, and God throws the enemy into confusion. The army collapses in chaos, proving that the outcome never depended on the size of Gideon’s forces.
This story reveals a pattern that appears often in God’s work. Sometimes He removes what feels like security so that trust in Him becomes unmistakable. What appears to be a reduction or a loss may actually be preparation for a clearer display of His power.
