“The LORD is with you, mighty warrior.” — Judges 6:12
SOUNDING
When God calls Gideon, Israel is living under the oppression of the Midianites. Each year enemy armies sweep through the land, destroying crops and livestock so the people are left utterly devastated. Gideon is found threshing wheat inside a winepress, a place normally used for pressing grapes. He is hiding there, working quietly so the Midianites will not notice and steal what little food he has left.
It is in this moment that the angel of the Lord appears and speaks words that sound almost unbelievable: “The LORD is with you, mighty warrior.” From Gideon’s perspective nothing about his situation feels strong or heroic. He is hiding, uncertain, and part of a nation that feels defeated. Yet God speaks to him not according to his present fear but according to the purpose God is about to unfold.
What follows is the beginning of Gideon’s calling to lead Israel against the Midianites. Gideon will struggle with doubt and ask God for reassurance along the way, but the identity spoken over him at the beginning remains true. God sees beyond the moment of fear and recognizes the courage He Himself will form in Gideon’s life.
This scripture reveals how God often works with His people. We tend to define ourselves by our limitations, insecurities, or current circumstances. God speaks according to the future He is shaping. His words call out potential that may still be buried beneath fear or uncertainty. When God names someone, He is not ignoring reality; He is declaring what His presence will make possible.
BEARING
God often speaks to who you are becoming, not only to who you feel you are today.
