“Another generation grew up who knew neither the LORD nor what He had done for Israel.” — Judges 2:10
SOUNDING
After Joshua and the generation that entered the Promised Land passed away, something deeply troubling started to happen in Israel. The people who had personally seen God’s work, the crossing of the Jordan, the fall of Jericho, and the battles where God fought for them, were no longer alive. In their place, a new generation grew up that hadn’t experienced those moments and, more importantly, hadn’t been grounded in the story of what God had done.
The book of Judges describes the tragic result, over and over again. This generation did not know the Lord and did not understand the history of His faithfulness. It was not because God had disappeared or stopped working. The problem was that the story had not been carried forward with the same clarity and conviction. What had once been a living memory slowly became distant history.
Judges shows what happens when spiritual memory fades; God’s people drift into confusion, repeatedly turning away from God and suffering the consequences. Yet the lesson reaches far beyond ancient Israel. Faith is not meant to exist in isolation within one generation. It is meant to be told, modeled, and embodied so that those who come after can understand who God is and what He has done. Stories of God’s faithfulness are meant to travel through families, communities, and generations so that the memory of His work remains alive.
BEARING
Faith remains strong when the story of God’s work is intentionally passed from one generation to the next.
PRAYER
Lord, help my life and my words point others toward You so that Your faithfulness continues to be known by the generations that follow.
