“Consecrate yourselves, for thus says the LORD… there are devoted things among you.” — Joshua 7:13

SOUNDING
Jericho had fallen in a miraculous victory, but God had given Israel a very clear instruction beforehand: everything in the city was to be devoted to the Lord. The silver, gold, and valuable items were to go into God’s treasury, and nothing was to be taken privately. Jericho was the first city of the Promised Land, and it belonged fully to God as an offering of trust.

But a man named Achan secretly took some of the forbidden items, a robe, silver, and gold, and hid them beneath his tent. No one else knew. Israel moved on to their next battle against the smaller city of Ai, expecting another easy victory. Instead, they were routed, and thirty-six soldiers died. The people were stunned. Joshua fell before God, asking why this had happened.

God revealed the deeper issue: the defeat was not about military strength but about hidden disobedience within the community. Achan’s private decision had created a breach in the covenant trust between God and Israel. Before they could move forward, the camp needed to be cleansed and realigned. That is why God commanded, “Consecrate yourselves.” The people had to face the truth, deal with what was hidden, and restore their commitment to God.

The story is sobering, but it also reveals God’s desire for integrity among His people. Consecration was not about punishment as much as restoration. God wanted the community to move forward with clean hearts and renewed trust. Sometimes what blocks progress is not the obstacle ahead but something buried beneath the surface that God wants to bring into the light.

BEARING
God restores forward movement when hidden compromises are brought into the light.

PRAYER
Lord, give me the courage to face anything in my life that is out of alignment with You and restore my heart to integrity.

DROP IN
Ask yourself honestly: Is there anything hidden in my life that needs to be brought before God so I can move forward with freedom?
