Scripture
“I will not leave you or forsake you.” — Joshua 1:5
SOUNDING
Joshua steps into leadership at a pivotal moment in Israel’s history. Moses has died after leading the people for decades, and now Joshua must guide them into the Promised Land. The weight of that transition would have been enormous. Moses had spoken with God face to face, led the Exodus, and carried the people through the wilderness. Now the responsibility shifts to Joshua, and before anything else happens, God speaks directly to him.
The promise God gives is simple but foundational: “I will not leave you or forsake you.” Joshua is not being told that the task will be easy or that the battles ahead will disappear. The land they are entering is occupied, and the road forward will require courage. What God gives instead is the assurance of His presence. The same presence that guided Moses will now guide Joshua. Leadership, uncertainty, and responsibility will all remain, but Joshua will not carry them alone.
This promise echoes throughout Scripture because it addresses one of the deepest fears people carry: the fear of being left to face life alone. God’s answer to that fear is not always the removal of difficulty but the assurance of accompaniment. His presence remains steady even when circumstances change. Joshua’s future leadership will rise and fall on many decisions, but the one thing anchoring him from the beginning is this promise that God will remain with him.
BEARING
The steadiness of life with God rests not in predictable circumstances but in the constancy of His presence.
PRAYER
Oh God, anchor my heart in the promise that You remain with me in every season and responsibility.
