“What does the LORD your God require of you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.” — Deuteronomy 10:12
SOUNDING
Moses is nearing the end of his leadership when he speaks these words. Israel stands on the edge of the Promised Land after decades of wilderness wandering, failure, correction, and formation. They have received laws, instructions, and warnings. It would be easy to assume that life with God is complicated. Instead, Moses distills everything into one clear question: what does God actually require?
His answer is surprisingly simple. Fear the LORD. Walk in His ways. Love Him. Serve Him with all your heart and soul. These are not four separate spiritual tasks but one integrated posture of life. Reverence shapes how you see God. Walking shapes how you live. Love shapes your motivation. Service shapes how your life is directed outward. Moses is reminding them that faith is not built on endless complexity but on a steady orientation of the heart toward God.
People often assume that spirituality requires mastering endless rules or performing impressive acts. Scripture repeatedly pulls things back to something deeper and more personal. God is not asking for a perfectly managed life. He is asking for a heart that reveres Him, a life that moves in His direction, affection that rests in Him, and devotion that serves Him. Faith is not complicated. It is consistent.
