“You may say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.’ You shall remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth.” — Deuteronomy 8:17–18
SOUNDING
Moses speaks these words as Israel prepares to enter the Promised Land. For forty years they had lived in the wilderness where survival was obvious dependence on God. Manna appeared each morning. Water came from rocks. Guidance came through cloud and fire. But the land ahead would look different. There would be crops, cities, homes, and stability. Moses knows the danger that often comes with blessing: forgetting the One who provided it.
The warning is not about wealth itself. It is about the quiet shift that can happen inside the human heart. When life begins to work, it becomes easy to rewrite the story. Hard work becomes the explanation. Talent becomes the reason. Discipline becomes the source. None of those things are wrong, but Moses reminds Israel that even the ability to work, think, build, and create comes from God. The strength in your hands, the clarity in your mind, and the opportunities in front of you are not self-generated. They are entrusted.
Success can quietly convince a person that they are self-sufficient. Scripture interrupts that illusion. Blessing is never meant to replace dependence; it is meant to deepen gratitude. Remembering God in abundance guards the heart from pride and keeps success from becoming spiritual amnesia.
