“Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him.” — Numbers 27:18
SOUNDING
Moses has carried the weight of leadership for decades. He has led Israel out of Egypt, through the wilderness, through rebellion, fear, miracles, and long seasons of formation. But his leadership is nearing its end. God tells Moses the time has come for someone else to lead the people into the Promised Land. Instead of leaving a vacuum, God names the next leader clearly: Joshua. The reason God gives is striking. Not strategy. Not personality. Not military brilliance. God simply says Joshua is a man “in whom is the Spirit.”
Joshua’s life up to this point has been mostly quiet service. He fought battles when Moses sent him. He remained near the tent of meeting while others returned to the camp, and he was 1 of 2 who trusted God to deliver the promised land. He followed Moses closely for years without needing recognition. Long before he is given authority, he develops proximity to God. Scripture rarely shows Joshua seeking position. Instead it shows him staying near the presence of God and faithfully serving the mission in front of him. When the moment of transition comes, God chooses the man who has already been formed in hidden places.
This moment reveals something important about how God raises leaders. Human systems often elevate visibility, influence, or talent. God looks first for a life shaped by His Spirit. Skill can be developed. Strategy can be learned. But a Spirit-formed heart creates the kind of leadership that can carry people forward faithfully. Joshua does not become the next leader because he pushed for the role. He becomes the next leader because, over time, his life became a place where God’s Spirit clearly rested.
