“Your way is perverse before me.” — Numbers 22:32

SOUNDING
Balaam enters the story as a prophet known for hearing from God, but his heart begins bending toward something dangerous. Balak, the king of Moab, offers him honor and reward if he will curse Israel. God makes His will clear: Balaam is not to curse the people God has blessed. Yet Balaam keeps entertaining the opportunity. He moves forward while quietly hoping the answer might change. As he travels, the angel of the Lord stands in the road to stop him, though Balaam cannot see it. Balaam’s donkey does see the angel and repeatedly turns aside to avoid the danger. Balaam grows angry and strikes the animal, unable to understand why it refuses to cooperate.

Then something extraordinary happens. God opens the donkey’s mouth and the animal speaks, asking Balaam why he keeps beating her. The moment is strange and almost disarming, but it reveals how blind Balaam has become. The donkey can see what the prophet cannot. Only after this does God open Balaam’s eyes to the angel standing in the road with a drawn sword. The message is direct and sobering: the path Balaam is walking is reckless before God. What Balaam interpreted as obstruction was actually rescue.

The recklessness in Balaam’s story is not loud rebellion but the quiet drift of a divided heart. Outwardly he talks about obeying God, but inwardly he still wants what the reward promises. God’s interruptions expose that tension. Sometimes the obstacles in front of you are not random resistance but divine mercy. When God blocks a road, or even uses unexpected voices to get your attention, it may be because He is protecting you from where that road leads.

BEARING
When God blocks a path, it is often protection rather than punishment.

PRAYER
Lord, give me the humility to recognize Your interruptions and the courage to change direction when You redirect me.

DROP IN
Is there a path you are pushing forward on despite warning signs? Pause and ask God honestly whether He may be redirecting you.
