“The glory of the Lord appeared to all the people. And fire came out from before the Lord and consumed the burnt offering…” — Leviticus 9:23–24
SOUNDING
To understand this moment, you have to trace the story back into Exodus. After rescuing Israel from Egypt, God gives instructions for building the tabernacle, a portable sanctuary placed at the center of the camp. It is where heaven and earth symbolically meet. The ark of the covenant rests inside the Most Holy Place, the altar stands outside for sacrifice, and the entire structure exists for one reason: God intends to dwell among His people. Exodus ends with the tabernacle completed and the glory of the Lord filling it, signaling that God has truly taken residence in the middle of Israel’s life.
Leviticus begins by explaining how sinful people can approach a holy God who now lives in their midst. The sacrifices, offerings, and priesthood are not random rituals; they are instructions for maintaining relationship. Aaron and his sons are set apart as priests who will represent the people before God. After days of preparation and consecration, Aaron offers the sacrifices exactly as God commanded. When Moses and Aaron bless the people, the Lord responds visibly. Fire comes from His presence and consumes the offering on the altar. The people fall on their faces because they understand what has happened: God has accepted the worship and confirmed that His presence is truly among them.
This moment reveals a pattern that runs through all of Scripture. God desires to dwell with His people, but His holiness requires alignment with His ways. The tabernacle made that possible for Israel. The sacrifices made room for communion. And the fire on the altar was God’s unmistakable affirmation that obedience had opened the door for His presence to be experienced. The forms have changed today, but the principle remains. When lives align with God, His presence becomes more than an idea—it becomes something people can recognize.
