“I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.” — Exodus 20:1–2

SOUNDING
When Israel gathers at Mount Sinai, they are about to receive the Ten Commandments. This moment becomes one of the most defining moments in their history. Yet before a single command is spoken, God begins with a reminder. He does not start with instruction. He starts with identity and rescue. “I am the LORD your God… who brought you out of Egypt.” The foundation of everything that follows is relationship. Israel belongs to Him, and their freedom came from His action, not their achievement.

That order matters. God does not give the law to earn His favor. He gives it to people who have already been delivered by His favor. The commandments are not the entrance into the relationship; they are the shape of life inside it. Israel does not obey to become God’s people, but because they already are. The law becomes the structure that protects freedom and teaches them how to live as a people who have been rescued.

This pattern runs through the whole story of Scripture. Grace comes first. Rescue comes first. Identity comes first. Only then does God speak about how life should be lived. Obedience is not a transaction designed to earn love. It is the natural response of people who already know they are loved.

BEARING
God’s commands grow out of relationship, not the other way around.

PRAYER
My Rescue, help me live in obedience that flows from knowing I already belong to You.
