“You will certainly wear yourselves out, both you and these people who are with you, for the thing is too heavy for you.” — Exodus 18:18

SOUNDING
After Israel leaves Egypt and begins forming as His people in the wilderness, they seem to constantly bring their disputes to Moses. From morning until evening, he sits as the lone judge, listening to conflicts, answering questions, and settling problems for an entire nation. Moses is sincere and faithful, but the system is unsustainable. When Jethro, his father-in-law, arrives and observes the pattern, he immediately sees the strain building beneath the surface.

Jethro (Moses’ father-in-law) speaks with clarity that Moses cannot see from inside the work. The problem is not Moses’ heart or dedication. The problem is the weight of solo leadership. One person trying to carry what was never meant for one set of shoulders. Jethro tells him plainly that both he and the people will wear out if nothing changes. Then he offers a wiser structure: appoint capable leaders, share responsibility, and allow smaller matters to be handled by others while Moses carries the most important decisions before God.

This moment reframes leadership. Faithfulness does not mean doing everything yourself. It means stewarding responsibility wisely so the work can endure. Delegation is not weakness, and structure is not a lack of devotion. They are part of God’s design for sustainable leadership. When the burden is shared, the leader remains steady and the community becomes stronger.

BEARING
Leadership lasts when responsibility is shared rather than carried alone.

PRAYER
LORD, give me wisdom to lead in ways that are faithful and sustainable.

DROP IN
Where might God be inviting you to release responsibility so others can step in and the work can continue with strength?
