Scripture
“Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side.” — Exodus 17:12

SOUNDING
Israel faces its first military battle after leaving Egypt when Amalek attacks in the wilderness. Joshua leads the men into the valley to fight while Moses stands on the hill with the staff of God in his hands. As long as Moses’ hands are raised, Israel gains the advantage. When his arms grow tired and begin to fall, Amalek pushes forward. The outcome of the battle becomes strangely tied to Moses’s ability to keep his hands lifted before God.

But Moses cannot sustain it alone. The day grows long, and his strength fades. Aaron and Hur recognize what is happening and move beside him. They place a stone under him to sit on and then physically hold up his arms until sunset. The victory in the valley is not the result of one man’s endurance but the result of shared strength on the hill.

This moment quietly dismantles the myth of solitary leadership. Moses is faithful, but he is also human. Even the one chosen to lead Israel needs others to steady him when his strength runs out. God’s design for endurance has never been isolation. Battles are often won because someone nearby refuses to let your arms fall.

BEARING
God often sustains leaders through the strength and presence of others.

PRAYER
Father, give me the humility to receive help and the courage to strengthen those who are growing weary. Show me those around me that need me to hold them up, too.

DROP IN
Who are the people that steady you when your strength fades, and who might need you to do the same for them today?
