“The people grumbled against Moses, saying, ‘What shall we drink?’” — Exodus 15:24
SOUNDING
Only three days earlier, Israel had walked through the Red Sea on dry ground. They had watched the waters close behind them and Pharaoh’s army disappear. The song of deliverance was still fresh on their lips. Yet when they reach Marah and find the water bitter, the mood shifts quickly. The same people who had just sung about God’s power now begin to grumble.
The problem isn’t just the water; it is how quickly memory collapses under pressure. Three days of desert travel are enough for fear to crowd out the miracle they just witnessed. Instead of interpreting the moment through what God has already done, they interpret it through discomfort, and gratitude fades while anxiety rises. Complaining becomes easier than remembering.
God’s response reveals His patience. He does not abandon them in frustration. He shows Moses a log and directs him to toss it into the water, making it sweet, and the journey continues. Israel is still learning what trust looks like beyond the crisis. The same God who split the sea remains present in the smaller tests that follow.
BEARING
Faith grows when today’s difficulty is interpreted through yesterday’s evidence of God’s faithfulness.
PRAYER
O God, when frustration rises, bring Your past faithfulness back to the front of my mind.
DROP IN
Pause today and name one moment where God clearly carried you. Let that memory steady how you face what is difficult right now.
