“When I see the blood, I will pass over you.” — Exodus 12:13
SOUNDING
Before this final night arrives, Egypt has already been dismantled, piece by piece. Each plague is not random judgment but a direct confrontation with the gods Egypt trusted. The Nile turns to blood, striking Hapi, god of the Nile. Frogs overrun the land, exposing the powerlessness of Heqet, goddess of fertility. Gnats rise from the dust to confront Set, god of the desert. Flies swarm, challenging Re and Uatchit. Livestock die, confronting Hathor, the cow goddess. Boils spread across the skin, defying Sekhmet, goddess of healing. Hail falls from the sky, striking Nut, goddess of the heavens. Locusts devour crops, confronting Osiris, god of fertility and harvest. Darkness covers the land, exposing Horus, the sun god. One by one, every source of Egypt’s confidence is revealed as fragile. What they trusted cannot protect them.
Then comes the final blow. The death of the firstborn strikes at Egypt’s deepest spiritual core. Min, god of reproduction. Heqet, who oversaw birth. Isis, protector of children. Even Pharaoh’s own firstborn, considered divine. None can shield what God has marked. At that moment, Israel receives precise instruction. A lamb is to be sacrificed. Its blood is to be placed on the doorposts. The distinction between life and death will not come from strength, heritage, or moral record. It will come from covering. “When I see the blood, I will pass over you.” Deliverance that night is not achieved. It is received.
Inside those marked homes are ordinary people with imperfect histories and fragile faith. They are spared not because they have proven themselves worthy but because they trust what God has provided. Passover establishes a pattern that runs through all of Scripture. Rescue flows through substitution. Security rests in provision. Freedom begins not with proving yourself but with receiving what God has already supplied.
BEARING
What you trust to protect you will always be tested. True security is found in what God provides, not in what appears powerful around you.
PRAYER
Almighty God, teach me to trust what You have provided rather than what feels strong or secure around me.
DROP IN
Where are you still placing your security in something other than God’s provision? Name it honestly and place it back in His hands today.
