“But the LORD was with Joseph and showed him steadfast love and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.” — Genesis 39:21
SOUNDING
Joseph has already been betrayed by his brothers and sold into slavery. He begins to rebuild his life in Egypt, only to be falsely accused by Potiphar’s wife and thrown into prison. Another loss. Another injustice. Another place he did not choose. From the outside, his story looks like a steady downward spiral. Every time it seems like his life might stabilize, it collapses again.
And yet Scripture repeats the same quiet truth it has said before: “The LORD was with Joseph.” Not when he finally succeeds. Not when circumstances improve, but in prison, in confinement. In a place defined by limitation and loss, God’s presence does not withdraw. It deepens. God shows him steadfast love and gives him favor even there. Joseph cannot control where he is placed, but he does control who he becomes in that place. He does not allow injustice to hollow him out. He allows God’s presence to deepen him instead.
This is one of the clearest pictures in Scripture of resilient faith. External conditions do not determine internal formation. A person anchored in God can grow in places that were meant to confine them. They can carry light into environments that feel dark. They can become trustworthy and steady even when life feels unfair. God’s steadfast love is not limited to open doors and visible progress. It often becomes most real in places where you have the least control and the fewest options.
BEARING
God’s presence does not depend on your circumstances. When He is with you, even confined seasons can become places of deep formation rather than quiet defeat.
PRAYER
Lord, help me recognize Your steadfast love in every place I feel confined or limited. Form strength and depth in me, where I feel stretched.
DROP IN
Look honestly at one difficult or confining area of your life and ask: How might God be forming something steady in me here?
